That Poet's Portrait

Obed Sarpong

When with his pen he strives to conquer
To settle his imagination on crumpled paper
The manifestation is of broken feet
Undeserving of appreciation or of a good read
The rhymes lifeless, pompously strangled
And made to fit places not their abode:
So joyous it is to make lines with dormant words
And much pleasure he derives -- never perturbed

Highly symbolic and allegorical piece

This exquisite poem about the dilemma of creativity, of an artists yearnings and aspirations, of the meaning of the very vocation he effortlessly professes, deep, overpowering, boundless and requires much skill and has a mystical aura around it yet fulfilling at the end, giving unexpected joys ...the artist is hapless and perhaps overburdened as a vessel, but in the end lucidly admits the superiority of his gifts.

The poem is well structured, succinct, symbolic and resonates with modernist innovations. The title is evocative and the allegory is but openly hidden which adds charming effects to the overall beauty of the poem.
