This ancient tragedy by William Shakespeare tells the story of two star crossed lovers whose families were at loggerheads.
Romeo and Juliet was staged at the Amphitheatre of the University of Ghana from 10th to 11th April 2008, at 7.30 pm each night.
The play was directed by George Owusu Ababio, with Daniel Mensah Adobavo as Romeo, Nana Fosuo Mensah as Juliet, Henry Owusu as Capulet, Robert Ahlijah as Montague amd Jerry Baidoo as Mercutio.
I was at the opening on Thursday, 10th April, and was quite impressed by the performance that was put up. It was well deserving of the opening night.
Before the play started, I spoke to a few people in the audience and found out that this was the first time that some of them had heard about the playRomeo and Juliet. Others, however, seemed to be die-hard Shakespeare fans who were on alert to see if the production would meet their expectations. I daresay they were not disappointed.
The performance of the actors was excellent and they recited their lines without error. The props were well handled and the background changes and scene setting were undertaken without any noticeable difficulties. The play was successful, however, one would have hoped for a larger audience. Perhaps, publicity for the production should have been more extensive.
