This Freedom I Choose

Johnny Fianu

Tomorrow comes
Clothed in webs of dreams
And there lies my misery

In another land
I shall bear all my deeds
In shame

For truly I am lost
Hearing voices that only sing
Songs of dreams and of pain

I walk in emptiness
And I have found desire
In the arms of my birth
There they all lie
Bearing their being upon their brows
And sharing my dreams only for a while

Once upon a time I was lost
In an open space
And now I am free to choose in this place:
So I choose to live the birds that fly
And the trees that dance
You I chose unwillingly
Only to bear this burden and worry
But if tomorrow does come out of nowhere
And in the midnight songs I hear
I awake!
I know my freedom is nowhere
To be seen
Yet I have chosen to be free.

(Editor's notes are in square parenthesis []).

I think this poem reinforces the desire of freedom that comes to man once he is conscious of his existence. But this freedom is nowhere to be seen as it is a part of the choices we make [that] bind us. The poem stresses on the fact that our existence comes to define the existence of all that is around us and so in our choices we dictate also for the rest of nature that came to life because of our existence. Thus we are held responsible for our actions and the course of the world. This poem laments our suffering and pain, and holds the poet responsible for the pain of others. Because in choosing to live, the poet has defined [the existence of] all of the pains and suffering of the world.
