Reader Review: The Slave Raiders
The Slave Raiders Kwakuvi Azasu's 'The Slave Raiders' is a recount of a series of events that occurred during the slave trade. It is a historical narration that has to do with the coming of the Europeans to the Gold Coast, and the birth of the Trans-Saharan slave trade. One of the most heart-breaking issues presented in this story is the involvement and control of the Church in the 'terrorist actions' against the Black Race. This is demonstrated by the sermon of his Right Reverend Bishop Lasscassas, during which he states: 'The most pious means by which a Negro might be delivered from his second original sin is through slavery.' What is even more agonising is the way the Scriptures were distorted to suit the Church and the certain individuals, most especially the wealthy and influential men like Sir Captain Hawkins. The high point of the story was when the people of Anlo came together to fight the common enemy, the slave raiders. This demonstrates the power of unity and brings out a clear solution to the African Crisis. Ruth Adjei. |
