Forever Long Queues

Foster Toppar

Today I exercised my right
In a town not far from sight

Today I exercised my power
To prove I am a strong believer

Today I exercised my franchise
Just as any man would have done

Standing in long queues under
The shades of the sun’s furious rays

Gave birth to migraines and dizziness
To the retirement of our grandparents

Who had come to bless the occasion
With weak but prophetic thumbs;

Party flags were inquisitive,
Disturbing the already decided minds.

Empty slogans were no longer justified
While incantations were swept off the streets.

Today I exercised my right
Regardless of the odds at the site.
