Plain Jane (3)Matilda Wilson Page 3 of 6 Esi moved out like a woman possessed and drove with great speed to her office. Everybody in the office realized their boss was in a bad mood. She stormed into her office and banged the door. Elsie, Esi's best friend, knocked on her door. 'Go away, whoever you are and leave me be.' Esi screamed. Elsie disregarded her friend and entered the office. 'Aaba Esi how can I let you be? You know me, I am the most fascinating friend you ever had and will always have. I was just wondering which devil bit you this morning. Why are you in such a bad mood? Tell this nosy lady please.' 'I am not talking about it with anybody, so leave me alone Elsie, can I at least have some privacy for once in my own office?' Elsie arched one eye brow, a gesture which meant she was not moving and Esi knew that too well. 'Ok Miss Nosy, can you believe what happened? Mrs. Ephson's son asked me to marry him just like that. It sounds silly. I don't know the damn guy and he doesn't know me from Eve, so what will possess him to ask me to marry him, as if he is mocking me. Or somebody told him my biological clock was ticking? I am perfectly fine at my age and I don't need a man. He can ask somebody else. Can you believe it, Elsie? He thinks every woman wants him, so I should too.' 'Wow Esi, this is like love at first sight. These things are rare you know, who knows, anything can happen within these few days to change your mind about the 'damn' man's proposal. You are such a lucky lady, the first guy who really gets interested in you is no other, than the famous Freddy Ephson, the owner of a chain of shops in Accra central. A renowned pathologist at the 37 Military Hospital, who goes around Europe like Kaneshie to Makola. Esi, I wish I was in your shoes, but it's quite obvious you refused him. Oh my friend, you are not getting any younger and the earlier you settled down the better. Who knows, maybe God arranged your meeting this way. Don't give up easily, and just because every man you ever got interested in at school never paid any attention to you, doesn't mean all men are animals. Come on, this is a golden opportunity; the man is loaded for crying out loud. 'Why don't you go and marry him Elsie, money is not everything you know. What about love, what about respect, what about understanding and all that goes with it. I can't believe you will even think this way, you are supposed to be my friend and not my enemy.' 'Hmm, look at your face Esi, you look all flustered just talking about the guy. You love him and stop this silly 'what abouts'. You are becoming a broken record. Life must go on Esi, you have feelings for this guy, and I will be damned if I will sit around and watch you waste this opportunity and not do anything about it.' Elsie said. 'I don't give a heck what you do, just not interested in the man. If he thinks he has money and can buy anybody or anything he wants, listen to me my dear, he is not getting this one here. So case closed, now lets get back to business. I need you to go to Game and see if you can get me those materials Mrs. Ephson needs. Make sure you buy quality because knowing the her, she wouldn't compromise on quality.' Esi said. Elsie moved on to do her boss's bidding, but with the look on her friend's face, she though that she had better do something about this Freddy thing quickly. Her friend hadn't shown any interest in any man for years. Knowing Esi, she would never accept that she loved the man. But Elsie knew a woman in love, and she wouldn't waste time arguing with Esi. ‘A girl's got to do what a girl's got to do' she soliloquized. Smiling to herself she moved out en route to Game on the Spintex road. Page 3 of 6 : Please click for the rest of the story --> |
